Chapter Seven

Deception

It’s a depressing thought that for all the good decisions we make, our lives can be defined by our mistakes. The trouble is, once we have committed ourselves to a mistake it becomes remarkably difficult to shift. Worse, a mistake has a habit of dividing and reproducing. Like the onset of a streak of bad luck that seems self-propelling, mistakes beget mistakes.

If possible the trick is to arrest the mistake before releasing it into the wild. But once hatched it can be too late, for it is invariably found in attractive packaging. The writer, Pearl Buck, summed it up neatly, saying: ‘Every great mistake has a halfway moment, a split second when it can be recalled and perhaps remedied.’

But sometimes the mere germ of an idea is enough to initiate catastrophe.

Engineer, Jeremy Vigon collided headlong with the first of what was to become a series of life-changing mistakes early one afternoon in a motel room. This was after the second day of a scheduled five in negotiation with a prospective customer who had declared a desirable contract as good as awarded. After a few handshakes and a couple of hearty pats on the back, this enabled Jeremy to report to his company that he had secured a lucrative deal. This was not altogether accurate as it had secured itself; but he reasoned if credit was due, it might as well go to him rather than rest on the shoulders of someone who had absolutely nothing to do with the project.

Naturally his employers were pleased. It prompted them to suggest he took the remainder of the week off. Adrift in a strange city, this left him at a loose end. At least that was his initial reaction. As it stood, the motel room had been paid for, meaning there was a city to explore for as many of the remaining days as suited. Beyond the door to his room an undiscovered world was at his disposal. He could dip into a pool of culture, take in one of several museums and art galleries, or go to the theatre or the movies.

Now, you might be thinking that sounded too good to be true. After all he was not on some cultural trip. What he was more likely to do was what any one in his situation would at least consider – that which under normal circumstances was unachievable. He could find a wine bar in the evening and unwind over a few drinks. More than that … yes, there were bars and clubs, some doubtless ever so slightly unsavoury and fleshy – the sort only a day-tripper or traveller frequented; and as both, he was not impervious to their lure.

With a wife at home who had apparently cooled to his advances, like so many men before him, however idiotic such a course of action might be, he was tempted by the thought of one crazy interlude with an unknown woman of the night – a woman with whom he could enact a longed-for scenario.
